'KERRANG!' Magazine Research

The images relate to the written content because the text stands out and draws the attention of the reader the same way that the images stand out and draw the attention of the reader as well. The main image is in the top third and is framed on the eye-line which allows the reader to see the image first. The image is a medium shot so the bottom half body of the men are cut out and the image of the men are quite cramped so there is not much space around them to show their point. The men in the image are wearing smart/casual therefore there is no formula and so they are each individuals and have their own identity/personality.The mask of one of the member of the band is used to emphasise the identity of that member. The culture of this band is indie/rock and is addressed to rock fans who enjoy listening to rock music and going to rock concerts. The colours used are dark such as black, grey, white, red so they are generally dark colours which contrast and differ from each other. The title ‘KERRANG!’ looks shattered to have impact so that the reader’s attention is drawn which also represents anger. The signs which show anger and that the magazine is ‘in your face’ is from the facial expressions of the rock band and because it is a rock magazine, red and the shattered glass effect of the title have been used. The relationship that the image has with the audience is that it includes the audience and makes the reader feel that they are part of the events.

The images of the rock band with its members take up most of the space on the cover page to show the importance of the rock band as some of the contents inside the magazine are about that rock band. Emphasis has been used as the title is emphasised and the image of the man in the centre of the magazine as his facial expressions are exaggerated. The section in red at the bottom of the magazine cover is emphasised because there is a different colour used which is in red therefore it stands out and draws attention to the reader. The ‘K! AWARDS’ title is also emphasised. Black and white is used to show contrast as the title ‘KERRANG!’ is in black and the background is white which allows the title to stand out. There is a balance for the visual field of the images and the text. The alignment is left aligned which engages the audience to buy the magazine.

The genre of the magazine is clearly shown on the magazine cover which is rock from the facial expressions of the rock stars on the magazine cover which are that they look angry and the title of the magazine ‘KERRANG!’ looks like shattered glass which also represents anger and the rock genre. In addition, the colours used include red, black, grey and other dark colours which also represent the rock genre of the magazine. The smaller images at the bottom of the magazine cover page also represent the rock genre because the fans are doing the rock hand sign and the masks that the rock stars are wearing also represent the rock genre which are what many rock stars wear in rock concerts and when they are performing.

There is a rhetorical question used ‘WISH YOU WERE HERE?’ and the effect this has on the reader is that it involves the audience and makes them think and want to read on. The language used is informal and relaxed to show that the magazine is directed to the audience and they are being spoken to directly. The images and the text link up to inform the reader of the famous music festivals, gigs and special events that the magazine knows the readers want to know about. The fact that the title ‘KERRANG!’ is covered up means that this magazine is very well known therefore they do not need to show the whole title. The text has been placed at the top, top third, middle and the bottom of the magazine cover page and this is important because the title of the magazine is at the top to show the title of the magazine and the main subtitle of ‘K! AWARDS’ is on the centre line of the magazine cover to show the reader the topic that will be discussed and the text on the bottom of the magazine cover page also shows the other topics and subjects that are also discussed in the magazine.
